Living for the Light

About Jay

I’m a philanthropic photographer enthusiastic about projects that help people who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford a photographer’s services. The scope of my work is diverse but I am most passionate about the use of artificial lighting to maximize the impact of my photos.

I am a Christian, a husband, a dog owner, a photographer and a quadriplegic living in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada.

I was born October 28, 1980 in Swift Current, Saskatchewan and grew up in and around the city. I enjoyed camping, recreational sports like archery and fishing, working with my dad, building things and school. Math, science, electronics and anything subjective were my favourite types of classes.

On September 23, 1997 I was involved in a single vehicle rollover which left me a quadriplegic. After completing rehabilitation at Saskatoon City Hospital I returned to Swift Current to finish high school. The following year, 1999, I was accepted to the Business Administration program at SIAST Palliser Campus. Accountancy was my choice of speciality.

After graduation in 2001 I was led by God to Saskatoon to continue my education with the Certified General Accountants of Saskatchewan. Health issues resulting from the heavy workload and time constraints prevented adequate time for personal care and revealed that I would require a different path. After meeting and marrying my wife, Angela, I began to explore my interest in web design and digital photography. I realized an undiscovered gift in far more creative areas than my original enjoyment of math, science and other subjective areas.

I had not been able to find a digital camera that I could use well with my paralyzed hands until Angela and I began to search for a one to purchase with some wedding money. After we found one, and I began to take a number of photos, I soon realized from encouragement from friends and family, that I had sharp eye for shooting and began turning an interest into a collection of God’s breathtaking scenery, skies, wildlife and nature photos all captured from my wheelchair. Exploration into macro photography and portraiture has opened whole new possibilities and categories of photography which you will find on this site.

I have a unique opportunity in that my photography is a gift from God that I am able to use to bless others. I seldom work for pay, but for the benefit of others and my own personal growth and experience. Any gifts I have been given for my work go right back into investing in photography or lighting equipment so I can stretch my skills and capacity to accomplish greater scale shoots.

If you wish to commission me please contact me. It’s not to say that I will always be able to meet your needs, be it from physical limitations or other reason, but I appreciate being considered first. Any of my photos are for sale in any form including prints, digital or complete photo rights if you feel there is a space on your wall, website or corporation needing some of my work.
