Somewhat of a Sad Post

I say somewhat because I know there are far more trying things in people’s lives than the inevitable and predictable autumn, but I still feel like I’m waiting for that week of +30 that we never had. Yes, there were nice days, but I still feel like Saskatchewan only received a taste of summer this year, among all our flooding and hail, while BC and Ontario baked.

I suppose the positive side is the much lower power bill as the air conditioning ran very little in our house.

I did make the most of our, potentially, last +31 day yesterday. Four hours at the Forestry Farm and zoo was time well spent.

I have seen some trees turning yellow already this year, but they were either very young or damaged limbs on mature trees.

One little leaf hiding didn’t bother me too much:

But when I came around a corner to find many trees fully turned and dropping leaves, the reality set in.

More from yesterday to come soon.

River Landing 4

My girls after a big run. Angie’s training for the Mogathon, a 30 km relay, with her sister, my best friend and a fourth I’ve not met. It will be five legs of six kilometres, two of which Stacey will be running.

River Landing 3

I’ll take another of this next time, but for now, try to figure out the wheelchair unfriendly angle to the sidewalk & bridge.

River Landing Findings 1

I’ve spent a bit of time down at the River Landing the last week.  I think I might explore it a little further this summer.

That was one proud papa. :)

2010 Wheelchair Basketball Nationals

The Canadian men’s and women’s wheelchair basketball nationals were right here in Saskatoon at the University of Saskatchewan Physical Activity Complex (a.k.a. The PAC) this past weekend. It was another first for Saskatoon and though I only made it out one day it was excellent to watch this sport at such a high skill level. I’ve never really shot sports before & found it to be a lot of fun. It wasn’t advertised as much as we’d hoped it would be, but the stands were full of kids whose teacher brought them Friday afternoon. That added to the fun.

Next time I head to the PAC I’ll bring some lighting gear. I had to park a long way away and wasn’t sure how far I would need to carry my many bags to be fully equipped. As well, I wanted to shoot less and watch more this time.

The Chewing Hour

Every night, as we get ready for bed, our Kiwi gets frisky. It’s either a squeaky toy or a rawhide. When bedtime for her comes she sometimes complains for awhile from within her bed. She would lay in our bed and chew for hours if we would let her.

Typically the next morning she heads straight for that bone as she did this morning. She was kind enough to greet us before resuming the duty of chewing. Eventually we got her to go outside to relieve herself. :)

Signs of Spring

I’m amazed at how so many of our leaves and berries have held on until now because of our late fall then sudden winter onset. I wonder at what point they will fall to make way for the new growth that is showing up here and there.

Saskatoon Zoo & Forestry Farm 2009 – Post 45

It was very interesting to visit this place so frequently during the year to watch the changes. The spring was quite disappointing and I hope next year will bring better blooms and butterflies.

This concludes my best photos from trips to the zoo and forestry farm. Some were sorted into the Fauna or Flora categories earlier in the year as I processed my favourites.

Some of these include:

Lavender and Orange Cups

Standing Out

and

White

Saskatoon Zoo & Forestry Farm 2009 – Post 42

They certainly grew up a lot this year from the 4 month old cubs they were when they arrived.

These are the little cougar cubs from earlier in the year. Half grown up.

This was one of the confrontational stances from a dispute over a bone I spoke about a few days ago. He had calmed down for the most part but was still asserting himself over the other one for the bone.
