Lynn and Nicole

Two weeks ago I had the opportunity to photograph a friend and her mother for the purpose of portraits to be used in a children’s book. Lyn had written it a number of years ago and had her daughter, Nicole, illustrate it.

I will return to update the post once the publishing process has reached a point of certainty. Until then, I’ll just say that Lyn had a great idea for a children’s book and had her talented daughter illustrate it. It sounds like a great story and she has more in mind for the future.

I hope only the best for them and their book.

Hard Earned Day – 1

After some trying shoots of larger groups I’ve avoided anything involving a larger number of people. Whether the cause was my inexperience or a lack of communication of what was expected and wanted or other factors does not matter. What matters is that I’ve learned more since that time and I stepped out of my comfort zone to have the best photographic experience of my life.

The kids (I feel old saying that) were so photogenic, in such a great mood and just so fun to work with. And they should have been in a great mood. They just had a huge accomplishment, looked the best they may have ever looked and had a fun evening in front of them not to mention a future full of possibilities.

I had a great assistant, Becky’s mom, who was invaluable as a VAL (Voice Activated Lightstand) and at posing and catching details I would have missed. It was a great learning experience for me.

A thought crossed my mind during the shoot. I wonder if the vastly increased presence of digital cameras has made younger generations more camera accustomed and less shy. Maybe it was just a great group of friends in a great mood on such a big day.

Enough philosophical musings; on to the photos.

Mogathon 2010

Angie, her sister & my bro, Stacey, participated in the Mogathon on Saturday. They did a great job! Especially Angie, in my humble opinion, as she had trained for six kilometers in only six weeks but when a team member couldn’t make it she simply doubled it. Her time was just over twice what it took her to do the original six. I’m so proud of her!

Cyclones Portraits – Part 2

Once again it was great to work with these young athletes. I have one more setup in mind for the team for the indoor portraits. And this time I need to convince the coaches to let me grab a few shots of them.

The Cyclones – Action

Here are a few of my action shots of the team from Monday evening.

I feel like I have some tweaking to make in my techniques, but after dropping a flash (thankfully the rubbery floor saved it), having battles with gear (mostly from paralyzed hands) and a few other struggles I was ready to settle & aim for more action shots in the future.

As much as I thought the end of a curve would be a great place to shoot it is also the point where the racers hit the lever that stops their chair from turning as it is set just before entering a corner. You can see Keira making the switch in the final photo.

The head coach, Rick, explained to me how the system works and is adjusted for each track and lane since all have varying sharpness to their corners. I know how little distance I cover and how little of my push goes into forward momentum when I’m fighting a sideways slope or cornering. This turning mechanism ensures as much push as possibly goes into their speed.

The Cyclones – Part 1

Earlier this week I spoke about working with the Cyclones. All I can say is that I’m pleased with the initial results. They have been made possible largely in part to the great attitude and cooperative nature that is the Cyclones.

My goal is to have enough shoots to give each of them unique shots of themselves. It will likely be an ongoing project for a few months and that is just fine with me!

This time my setup was aimed to give a sports drink style photo. They were processed as such with colours intensified and contrast strengthened to really pop.

Pure Drive

Yesterday The Running Room in Saskatoon sponsored a half hypothermic marathon.

The route took the participants from the Sheraton Cavalier south, over the Sid Buckwold Bridge, north along the Mewasin Trail to the Circle Drive Bridge, across it then all the way back to the Sheraton. That was a significant summary of the route compared to viewing the actual 14+ mile map.

One of the competitors was my bro, Stacey. Look at that focus!

The efforts of these men and women is simply amazing. Their drive, endurance and determination is something far fewer people have these days.

Stacey was dealing with a recurring hip injury that he overcame with weeks of stretching, strengthening and therapy. He slowed his pace slightly, still beating the time goal he set for himself. By the end he was experiencing pain in a knee (likely from favouring his bad hip), pride, dehydration and untold other emotions and sensations from an unbelievable accomplishment. We are all proud of him.

I’d hoped to have more shots from other positions but snow and construction prevented us from getting to my first location. The second was ideal. The third, the river landing, we waited at for a good fifteen minutes, observing the runners before and after him come and go, but no Stacey. After the cold got to me we left for fear of him being injured. We failed to find him by backtracking though much of the course is not visible or directly accessible by street, so we proceeded to our lunch destination. When we reconnected we enjoyed lunch together before they came back to our home, packed up and returned to Regina.

I told Stacey that I would be pleased to shoot his next run as long as it wasn’t in winter. :)
