Spring Has Come 5

Just in time for summer’s arrival, I post my final shot from this series. There are more waiting to be shared as I get them ready for you and I guarantee there will be more before this season quickly comes and goes as it always does.

Spring Has Come 2

The rest of my butterfly shots from last Sunday. They certainly seemed to be feasting on those huge white blooms. I hope the number of species is more diverse this year as it progresses.

Spring Has Come

Finally, after weeks of record breaking rain, with just a few weeks to go until the official start of summer, the flowers have begun to bloom. I certainly enjoy the animals of the zoo, but the flowers are my focus this year.

I’ve wondered what life in BC might be like. I think I could handle the significant signs of spring four months earlier than here in Saskatchewan, but the rain & cloud might be too much for me. I don’t know if it was the actual cloud and rain, or the delay of spring it caused here, that made this spring feel like such a waste if not non-existent. Perhaps in BC the signs of life for so much more of the year, even with the cloud and rain, would balance it out. Just some thoughts caused by the recent weather.

I began my trip last Sunday with the recently opened butterfly garden.

Found ‘Em!

I guess I’m not crazy. My parents found my marbles among some keepsakes. I brought them back and doubt this will be the last you’ll see of them.

Taking this outside on our first 20+ degree day of the year was absolutely a pleasure. I love spring!

Mightier Than the Sword

Recently my dad’s final living aunt, Aunt Lily, passed away. The funeral was in Swift Current and one of my dad’s cousins, Laurie, the daughter of Aunt Lil, and her husband, Harold stayed with my parents. While there they learned much about each other including that Harold turns rare wood for pen sets. He gave a set to my dad.

I couldn’t believe how amazing they were when I saw them last weekend.

The wood in this pen came from Brazil. I’m not certain what type it was but it gave me new appreciation of the value of pen sets like these.

Special Little Bear

Katelyn, the younger sister of my friend who was with me in the truck the evening of my accident, gave me this bear when I was in rehab at Saskatoon City Hospital.

From the forced powdered iced tea mix inhalations from her brothers & I to her retaliatory groin assaults there were some sibling mischief. But when it came down to it her brothers would have done anything to protect her and I would have been right there beside them.

Unfortunate that time can separate people as it does but thank you, Katelyn.

Pink Vial

Using the same lighting technique as yesterday, but with a bit of sunlight reflected back at the front to bring out the edges of the vial’s angles, I took these at the same time as the glasses. This vial was given to Angie by her grandmother.

I know these two are almost identical, but the sunlight refracted off the stopper but was only visible in the reflection. Caught my eye as interesting.

Low Key Drinking Conveyances

This is the first time I’ve used this low key lighting technique. It started as a learning experience but the results were postworthy.

Up From the Muck

Simply new work with water. I still have goals I want to achieve with water, but this look is something I’ve been trying to capture.

These last two just jumped back at the camera.

Pink & Blue Orb

Using a new technique I’ve discovered I was able to begin to cause a transparent effect similar to “Grandma’s Reading Chair”. As I refine it I’ll have more, obvious, examples for you in the future.

Stop Motion Water Drop

These certainly aren’t from one water drop. To the best of my knowledge there currently is no DSLR that could capture a complete water drop using standard continuous shooting. Even at 10 frames per second I don’t think it would be fully captured.

More, better shots coming soon.

Blinds

The pattern in these blinds was my next shot for the series on repetition. Past shots in this series focused mainly on the actual pattern or repetition. I decided to step away from it but incorporate it into these shots.

One technical note. I used no flash for this shot but two reflectors and the sun as the key/backlight.

Series of the Longest Running Series

Continuing with my repetition series is simply our well spun Simpson DVDs. Sorry it came so late in the weekend. As mentioned in earlier posts, it has been hectic and unusual lately. The blizzard this weekend made plenty of indoor time to play with some new gear to make a few photos.
